Robert Duncanson, "Classical Landscape With Ruins" (1854), Howard University Collection
Here’s a quick update on some new exhibits, art news and great blog posts that may have slipped through the cracks:
- The Taft Museum of Art presents Together Again: Robert S. Duncanson and Nicholas Longworth which displays a great example of the artist/patron relationship. Duncanson was the first African-American painter to garner national attention and was commissioned by Longworth to paint murals in the halls of his home, now the Taft. More here…..
- As always Jonathan Jones, art critic from The Guardian, has written a great post on his blog about the lack of sexuality in art. Now, I’m not a fan of shock for shock’s sake, but Mr. Jones does make a few good points. More here…..
- Judith H. Dobrzynski over at the Real Clear Arts blog reports on a rather sad and sobering view of art students’ disregard for visits to an actual museum. The logic: “Why go to a museum when we can look at the same museum’s collections online in all their mega-pixel glory?” More here…..
- And finally, Shelley Esaak of the About.com Art History blog, writes about one of the most disgusting paintings ever to be put to canvas. While I must say that I agree with Ms. Esaak in that I do like Peter Howson’s painting for the most part, I am glad that this painting of Madonna and Guy Ritchie (in “happier times”) was a bust at a recent auction.
