The Prado Museum in Madrid just announced that this painting, which was considered one of Goya’s masterpieces, has been misattributed and did not come from the paintbrush of Francisco de Goya.
Colossus, which had been thought to be Goya’s critique of Napoleon’s invention of total war, has always given me panic attacks. The vastness of it’s space (when seen in a larger version) gives me migraines and some sort of existential nausea. Maybe now that we know it’s not a Goya I’ll be seeing it less and less. (Unless I look at my own blog. Huh.)
